Why Your Google Business Profile Matters (And How To Claim It in 10 Minutes)

30-50% of local chef traffic comes from Google Maps and 'near me' searches. If your Google Business Profile is unclaimed or out of date, that traffic goes to someone else.

Here's an uncomfortable truth: for every hour you spend on Instagram, you're probably getting 1/10th the bookings you'd get from a properly configured Google Business Profile.

A Google Business Profile (GBP — formerly "Google My Business") is the free listing that shows up when someone searches "private chef near me," "caterers in [your city]," or when your name appears in Google Maps. It's the single highest-leverage piece of local SEO a chef can own.

And if you haven't touched it in a few years, it's almost certainly costing you bookings.

What a GBP actually does

When someone searches for a private chef or caterer in their area, Google doesn't show 10 blue links first — it shows the map pack: three businesses with photos, star ratings, and a direct "Website / Directions / Call" row. That map pack gets roughly 70% of the clicks on local searches. If you're in it, you get inquiries. If you're not, you don't.

GBP is how you get into the map pack. Not the only way — your star rating and review count matter too — but the baseline is: have a GBP, with complete info, with current photos, and recent reviews.

Check if you already have one

Most chefs have one they've forgotten about. Before you create a new one, check:

  1. Go to Google and search "[your business name] [your city]"
  2. Look for a sidebar (on desktop) or a card (on mobile) with your business info
  3. If it exists, scroll down — look for a small link that says "Own this business?" or "Claim this business"

If Google has a profile for you and you've never logged in, click claim. Verification usually happens by postcard (Google mails a code to your address — takes ~5 days).

If you don't have one, create one in 10 minutes

  1. Go to business.google.com
  2. Click "Manage now" → enter your business name
  3. Pick a category: Private Chef, Caterer, Cooking School, whatever fits
  4. Add your service area (cities you serve — GBP supports "service-area businesses" so you don't need a storefront)
  5. Add your phone, email, and booking URL (point this to your SoYummy site)
  6. Upload 10+ photos. More is better.
  7. Verify — postcard to your address, takes 5 days. Do NOT skip this; unverified profiles are invisible.

What to fill in (ranked by impact)

Once you have access, spend 30 focused minutes filling these out. In order of how much they move the needle:

  1. Photos. Upload your best food shots. Ten minimum. Update monthly. Google's algorithm loves active profiles.
  2. Service areas. List every city you'll travel to, not just one. Each city is a separate ranking opportunity.
  3. Business description. 750 characters. Include the words people actually search: "private chef," "in-home catering," your cuisines, your city.
  4. Hours. Even if you're event-based. Google penalizes profiles without hours. Put "by appointment" if nothing else.
  5. Website URL. Point it at your SoYummy site (or your main booking page if you have a custom domain).
  6. Booking URL. Same, or your direct /book page. This unlocks the "Book Online" button on your profile card.
  7. Reviews. Ask every happy client to leave one. The fastest way to climb the map pack is 5+ recent 5-star reviews.

The review trick most chefs miss

Google counts recent reviews more than total reviews. A chef with 50 reviews from 2022 loses to a chef with 8 reviews from the last 6 months.

Practical move: after every event, send a one-line follow-up text: "Thank you so much for trusting us with your event. If you had a good time, a quick Google review helps us find more clients like you — here's the link." Include the direct review link from your GBP dashboard.

Do this for 10 events in a row and you'll be in the map pack for your city.

Keeping it in sync with your site

If you update your phone number, email, or service areas on your SoYummy dashboard, you'll want to reflect those changes on your GBP too. For now that's manual — log into business.google.com and update there. We're building automatic sync (coming soon) so SoYummy becomes the single place you update, and your GBP follows along.

Mark it done on your dashboard

When you've claimed and filled out your GBP, head back to your dashboard and mark "Claim your Google Business Profile" as complete. That clears the checklist item — and nudges one less thing on your plate.
